Armenia had eight representatives in the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, and two of them won medals: Karen Margaryan got gold for weightlifting and Sahak Hovhannisyan took bronze for wrestling.

Future stars of big-time sports: Karen Margaryan

Armenia had only one quota for weightlifting. The coaching staff of the team decided that the winner of this year’s European Championship Karen Margaryan (77kg) would go to the Olympics.

They made the right choice: Margaryan won the gold medal in Buenos Aires.

Mediamax Sport has sat down with the young weightlifter to talk about his new achievement.

I trained very hard and seriously for the Olympics, because I was trusted with the only quota for Armenia. It put huge responsibility on me. So, I did everything to win.

There is no secret in winning. You simply need to train smart, because focusing on the physical side alone is not enough.

The coaches helped me with everything they could. They helped me correct my errors, advised me on mental preparation. I don’t like saying that I will definitely win before the tournament, because sport in unpredictable. Anything can happen.

The final part of the Olympics was especially difficult. I was certain of securing the medal only during my last few attempts.

I was keeping pace with the Uzbek athlete. We had the same results until the end, when one kilogram decided in my favor and I put an end to that tense competition.

I was not stressed throughout the games, because I was confident and I believed I would win a medal.
