Greco-Roman style wrestler Roman Amoyan is one of our most positive, kind, friendly and distinguished sportsmen.

Roman represented Armenia brilliantly at many tournaments, gaining victories and expanding the collection of medals of the Armenian sport. He is a European champion, silver medalist of World Championship, and bronze medalist of the Olympic Games.

We talked to Roman Amoyan for this issue of Mediamax Sport’s Unforgettable victory series. Read and find out which of his wins he cherishes the most.

I won silver at the World Championship in 2009. I trained very hard for that competition and managed to do my best at every match.

Unfortunately, I lost to Reihanpour Soryan (Iran) in the final and took the second place on the podium.

I had a truly unforgettable victory in that championship though. In 1/8 final I wrestled with Rovshan Bairamov (Azerbaijan), who defeated me in the Olympics a year earlier, leaving me with just the bronze medal.

I went there to prove that I was one of the best in my weight category. That’s why I did everything possible to get to the final. I was more organized during the matches, more focused, and I felt that I was stronger.

The matches contained three rounds at that time. I won the first one, and he won the second.

I heard my coaches in the last round, urging me to lift and roll my opponent. It was my skill, so I gathered all my strength and rolled him. I won and qualified for the next stage.

I remember now the great tournaments I had, the wonderful moments I lived and the medals I won for my country and my people. I am very happy and proud for that.

It is a great honor for me to introduce Armenia to the world and make our anthem play. It is a dream of every athlete, as you get a chance to do something useful for your homeland.
