Armenian cyclist Edgar Stepanyan won two large international tournaments within approximately 10 days. First he became European U23 champion and then he won the qualifying tournament in Omsk, Russia.

Stepanyan has told Mediamax Sport he has been in a good form and he knew he could compete for medals.

“I was very confident and calm, because I knew I could do it. I always intend to fight till the end as soon as I’m at the start. It’s very important to be ready mentally. My competitors were strong and quite well-known, so the competition was tough from the beginning to the end. I’m happy I won these tournaments and made history for Armenia,” said the young cyclist.

He believes winning in international tournaments and earning quotes is very important, but he doesn’t think long about his achievements and starts pursuing new goals quickly.

“I never think, “I came first today, it must help me next time.” You can fall to the bottom of the ranking in an instant. I know I expect good results from myself. I’m very demanding to myself, because I train every day to win titles. When I manage that, I feel very happy,” said Stepanyan.

He competes in the U.S. now, and according to Edgar, this year’s move has helped him improve, making it easier for him to compete with other cyclists in European tournaments, who are all with professional clubs and perform in many competitions.

“They are usually better prepared physically and they get tired later. It’s very important to have a club. I’m already thinking about doing well at the next tournament. Tomorrow I’m going to Astana to compete in scratch race, and then I will return to Armenia to get ready for the first round of World Cup, which will take place in Paris on October 19-21,” said Stepanyan.
