Armenian men’s weightlifting team has won two medals in 89kg category in the European Championship. Hakob Mkrtchyan won the gold and Davit Hovhannisyan took the bronze.
Mediamax Sport has talked to the team’s coach Vigen Khachatryan after the athletes completed their performances.
“We expected Hakob to win the gold medal, because he lifted the same weight (207kg) in the last World Championship. He prepared very well for this tournament, and he was brilliant.
So was Davit. He did the impossible, lifting the weight he had never lifted in training. He deserves his medals.
This is a great start of the year for the boys ahead of the World Championship, which will take place in autumn. They can train to lift more kilograms and win medals there too.
Davit will stay in the 89kg category and Hakob will shift to 96kg in the World Championship,” said the coach.
