Harutyun Merdinyan is one of the most successful and famous athletes in Armenian gymnastics of recent years.

He managed to make a comeback after the years-long pause, bringing Armenia medals from World and European championships.

The gymnast talks about the most important of those achievements in Unforgettable victory series of Mediamax Sport.

The gold medal I won in European Championship last year was truly special to me. Not only because our anthem played in my honor, but also because the win was long-awaited. Last time an Armenian gymnast won European Championship was 61 years ago, when Albert Azaryan became champion. I was able to repeat his success so many years later.

It is difficult to describe what I felt at the moment. I was very proud to uphold the honor of my parents, coaches, friends, and the entire Armenian nation. No victory is easy. I worked hard to achieve that result.

I competed for the gold for years but couldn’t get it. After so many attempts, I got what I wanted in 2016.

I worked very hard with my coaches to win that medal. I am grateful to all who were there for me in difficult and decisive moments.

It’s been a whole year since that medal. New competitions are approaching, and naturally, I will strive for new achievements.

I never forget about the European Championship. Every time I recall it, I am urged to achieve even more.
