Just like in 2019, Arsen Harutyunyan is the only member of Armenia’s freestyle wrestling team to win a medal in the European Championship.

He had won the title last year and took the bronze medal this time in 61kg weight category. Arsen Harutyunyan spoke to Mediamax Sport from Rome to sum up the championship and share his plans for the future.

It is upsetting to get the bronze after winning the gold last year, but I am satisfied with my performance. I was unrestrained in all my matches, which has never happened before. I was very active and I did not concede points.

In the semi-final I lost my focus in the last seconds of the match. I wanted to maintain the score to win but conceded points. I learned a lot from that defeat. I must never stop moving, I have to work until the last second.

It was a confident win in the match for bronze. I won 10-0. My opponent was Georgios Pilidis, we have been competing since young age and he always beat me, so there was a lot of tension. I’m happy to have beaten him this time and prove that I’m growing as a wrestler.

This championship has taught me a lot. I have grown professionally since the previous tournament too, I concede less points and win more matches. Now I will work to correct my mistakes and prepare for the qualification event.
