Armenia’s Karen Avagyan (89kg weight category) won the EWF Junior Weightlifting Championship in Bucharest on October 24 with the combined result of 364kg.
He has talked to Mediamax Sport about the win, self-criticism, important achievements and big plans.
Winning the Junior Championship gave me contrasting feelings. On one hand I am happy, because I lifted 170kg in snatch, setting a world and Europe record in the junior category. On the other, I’m upset that I failed clean and jerk completely. I’m sure I could have done better.
The competition was tough, but I was certain I would win.
This gold medal is very important for me. After working so hard for it, I just had to win. Such achievements usually boost the athlete’s confidence.

Now I have to train for the senior Armenian Championship, which will be held in 2020. I have to perform well to go to the European Championship. My goal is to win a senior gold.
