Head coach of the men’s weightlifting team of Armenia Pashik Alaverdyan has summed up the team’s performance and results at the World Championship held in Pattaya, Thailand.

Armenia won 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. In the medal table, Armenia finished 3rd.

It is my pleasure to announce that we were the best out of 103 participating countries. True, China topped the medal table, but we brought much fewer athletes, so our result is bigger. I congratulate Armenian people – our team performed very well.

Silver medalist Gor Minasyan keeps raising the bar for himself, lifts more and more, and he’s very confident in both snatch and clean and jerk. He doesn’t fear the opponents. I believe he will challenge Lasha Talakhadze one day. Gor is the athlete I have most faith in when he orders the weight.

World champion Simon Martirosyan is the only one who pulls himself together very quickly even if the pre-exercise training isn’t good. He uses all his senses and wins medals every time. His combined result is not enough yet to compete in the Olympics, unfortunately. He allowed the others to catch up in Pattaya, but he would lift as much as required to win.

I am disappointed with Andranik Karapetyan’s performance, although he had issues before the tournament too. He had double pneumonia. However, during the training he set world records of 175kg in snatch and 205kg in clean and jerk. Andranik isn’t happy with his performance either. He’s having a bit of a rough period again. Back in the Olympics he broke his arm during clean and jerk, although it is a 1/2000 possibility. At the European Championship this year, it turned out he was 80 grams above the weight he’s supposed to have, and we all have our share of the blame.

Our another champion, Hakob Mkrtchyan didn’t compete in an Olympic category. There are 8 months left until the games, but Hakob needs to either lose 10kg of weight or put on around 7kg. It’s impossible to do that and get excellent results at the same time in just 8 months.
