Bronze medalist of the Olympic Games, weightlifter Gevorg Davtyan now has won as a coach as well: Armenia got a gold medal in Buenos Aires Youth Olympics under his guidance. Davtyan has spoken about his debut as a coach in the Olympics, the selection of athletes and the performance of Karen Margaryan, whose brilliance brought the gold to the Armenian team.

We expected Karen Margaryan to win, he was trained really well. We had only one Olympic quota and I made the right decision on who should get it. I was right to trust Karen.

Tension would get very high during the games, but Karen was able to overcome it. He was calmer for clean and jerk in particular and we got the result that we wanted. Karen lifted just one kilogram more than the runner-up, but it was all he needed to take the gold.

The Olympic Games aren’t World or Europe championships. Our young medalists Simon Martirosyan, Hakob Mkrtchyan and Karen Margaryan went through a lot physically and emotionally in the Olympics. It will help them be better prepared for competition in the future.

Karen gained plenty of experience in the games. He saw winners and tears of the athletes who lost before his attempts, but I told him not to pay attention to anything. If he keeps going in the same way, I am certain he will have bigger achievements.

We have a great young generation of weightlifters. They will be able to win many more medals for Armenia.
