Rio de Janeiro Games in summer promise to be the most colourful, bright and unforgettable. Brazilians did everything to make the Games month the best for participants and guests of Olympic Games.
Mediamax Sport continues to make you familiar with Olympic Rio, and tells about the venues this time.
Certain famous venues of the city will be used for 31st Summer Olympics, and several new one are to be built. All Olympic venues are located in 4 zones: Maracanã, Barra, Copacabana, and Deodoro.
Barra
Barra is to host the majority of sports events: competitions in 16 out of 42 sports. Several new Olympic venues were located for that purpose in this zone that’s considered central and main. There are 3 main arenas, all called Carioca. They were given numbers to differentiate (Carioca Arena 1, etc.).

Divers and water polo players will compete at Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre. Gymnasts will match strength on Rio Olympic Arena. Boxers and weightlifters will perform in Riocentro. Basketball and combat sports competitions will be held in different training halls of Barra.
Barra will also be home to Olympic village, International Broadcasting Centre-Main Press Centre complex, as well as Tennis Centre and Velodrome.
Deodoro
Deodoro has fewer venues that Barra. Athletes will compete for medals of 11 sports on 8 platforms. This zone is located in the city’s west and was built for 2007 Pan-American Games.

Deodoro will host horse riding, modern pentathlon, fencing, cycle racing, and shooting competitions.
Maracanã
This zone is located in the north of Rio de Janeiro and includes one of the biggest and most famous stadiums in the world Maracanã, and the home of annual Brazilian carnival Sambódromo.
The opening ceremony will take place at Maracanã on August 5. The 90,000 capacity stadium will also host the closing ceremony and the final match of football championship.

Archers competitions and the launch of women’s and men’s running marathons will be conducted at Sambódromo.
Athletics competitions won’t be held at the main stadium for the first time in the history of Olympic Games, they will be hosted at Joao Havelange stadium.
Copacabana
One of the most famous locations of Copacabana is the 4km-long crescent-shaped beach. Beach volleyball competitions will be held at this beautiful sunny place. The marathon swimming, triathlon, and Olympic cycling road race will take place at the southern end of the beach.

A little further inland, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas with the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer above will host the rowing and canoe sprint events. Sailing competitions will take place at Guanabara Bay.
Competitions will be held at 4 other Brazilian cities as well: Belo Horizonte, Salvador, São Paulo, and Brasilia. Football matches of the Olympic Games will take place in those cities.
