89-year-old Charles Aznavour attended Zurich Chess Challenge in 2014 and made the first move in the game between Levon Aronian and Hikaru Nakamura.
Aronian won that game and wrote on his Twitter page: “I dedicate this game to legendary Charles Aznavour, who visited me in Zurich”.
Aznavour gave an interview to famous chess commentator Gagik Hovhannisyan. Mediamax Sport presents the most memorable excerpts from the interview:
It was 30-35 years ago, when I played chess; I played like crazy.
Misak Manushyan taught me how to play, when he lived at our place. There was nothing to do all day long. Being active was necessary, so we started to play chess, make moves, though mainly he was the winner. Those were years of Paris blockade.
Then I played with my pianist, and then with members of Rabat group. They were Lebanese, but their mother was Armenian.
I loved chess like mad, and I didn’t have anything else in my mind. I’ve started to follow chess again, since there is an Armenian playing now (he relates to Levon Aronian).

I was reading the book of chess player Tartakower. I always try to learn something new, and I concentrate on the topic.
When Armenians win, I am always happy. I will continue to follow the games. Armenians should always win. I become close to Armenians, who I meet at my concerts.
