Armenian Judo Federation’s President Vardan Voskanyan and Secretary General Tatul Hovhannisyan have paid a visit to Budapest at the invitation of Marius Vizer, President of International Judo Federation.

The parties met to discuss the participation of Armenian national team in the upcoming World Championship, where athletes can win the most points to qualify for Tokyo Olympics. The tournament is to take place at Baku, Azerbaijan, which is currently involved in a long-standing conflict with Armenia.

Vardan Voskanyan and Tatul Hovhannisyan said that Armenian athletes would travel to Baku only if Azerbaijan guaranteed their safety at the state level, and Marius Vizer promised to handle the issue.

The parties also discussed how judo can be popularized in Armenia. Mr. Vizer suggested organizing test judo classes in several schools jointly with the Armenian Ministry of Education and Science.

The International Judo Federation is ready to cover the instructors’ wages and provide the tatami mats and the uniforms. If the attempt is successful, the program will be introduced permanently.
