Pele’s farewell game was attended by the most famous people in the world. Thousands of fans were present during the glorious match, performed by the King of Football, while a number of American TV stations broadcasted it live.
This edition of Mediamax Sport’s In One Shot series is dedicated to the historic picture, which was taken on that day.
Pele’s last game took place on October 1 of 1977. The Giants Stadium of New Jersey hosted his two teams: New York Cosmos and Santos. The King of Football played the first half in the composition of the American team and the second one with the Brazilian team. He scored his last goal in professional career in favor of New York Cosmos.
77 thousands of viewers included Pele’s family, U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Bobby Moore, Mick Jagger, Elton John, Robert Redford and, of course, boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
Pele and Ali were the most renowned athletes at the time. People noted that fans were welcoming Ali and sending kisses, but he was focused on Pele like an excited child.
After the match Pele met Ali on the field, when this historic black and white picture was taken.
Years later Pele told: “Ali was my friend, my ideal and hero. We spent a lot of unforgettable days together and were always in great relations. He was a very joyful person who liked jokes. He used to tease me, telling that he was more famous than me. In cooperation with UNICEF, we worked with children as well. Once Ali said that football is more beautiful than boxing and then added: “I am more handsome than you.”
