The Armenia team managed to win a bronze medal and two entries for World Championship at the European Boxing Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria. Aram Avagyan (56 kg) climbed to the third spot of the podium.
Head coach for the team Davit Torosyan told Mediamax Sport correspondent that he had higher expectations from his boxers.
“Beyond doubt, Aram had a good fight. He is gradually recovering from a number of failures he had last year. I am happy with him. Aram is very hard-working, and it helps him attain good results,” said the coach.
He hopes Avagyan will fight well at the World Championship in Doha from October 8 to 16. According to Torosyan, although there will be tougher competition, especially considering that Olympic entries will be drawn there, they still have time and will manage to properly get ready for it.
Koryun Soghomonyan (52 kg) will also leave for the World Championship; Koryun dropped out of the competition at the European Boxing Championships right after the first bout. “Koryun lost to the strongest athlete of the tournament. He was not ready to face such an opponent. Koryun is one of our gifted and talented boxers and I also expect good results from him.”
According to Torosyan, the refereeing in Bulgaria was very partial and several Armenian boxers – Hovhannes Bachkov, Arman Hovikyan and Samvel Barseghyan – were deprived of their victories. The rest of the team’s boxers lost as they were really weaker than their opponents.
