Armenian gymnasts struggle to get visas for World Cup in Germany

The Armenian gymnastics team is preparing for FIG Individual Apparatus World Cup, organized in Cottbus, Germany.

Head coach of the team Hakob Serobyan has told the press today that the German Embassy is hindering the visa process for the Armenian athletes.

“The competition begins on November 21, but the embassy still hasn’t set a date for us. They say November 18 is the only date available, but we must be in Cottbus on that day already. The organizers tried to contact the embassy, and no reply has come yet. Now we have to apply to corresponding Armenian state bodies and see what can be done. Several athletes don’t need a visa now, but if we don’t solve this issue, Vahagn Davtyan and Artur Avetisyan won’t be able to come,” said Serobyan.

In World Cup series, athletes can win Olympic quotas. Armenian team will miss two tournaments and the European Championship 2020, because these three competitions will be held in Azerbaijan.

“Two other World Cup tournaments will take place in Australia and Qatar. We will definitely go to Doha, but there are some doubts over Australia,” added Serobyan.

As of the moment, Armenia’s gymnastics team has just one Olympic quota, won by Artur Davtyan (vault).
