Armenian Urartu basketball team will start its performance at Russian Basketball Super League 1 with a game against BC Ryazan basketball team at Dinamo Sport complex.
Head coach of the team Tigran Gyokchyan told during the meeting with journalists that Urartu is not 100 % ready yet, though it has registered victories at all friendly matches recently held in Tbilisi.
“We showed that we created a strong and interesting team, everything must be going well. Preparatory stages were not quite certain, the legionaries were late, but the athletes worked hard on physical readiness in summer. I have only tactical and technical issues to solve,” the coach said.
Three American basketball players replenished the team and one of them, Todd O’Brien, will get Armenian citizenship and play in the squad of national team as well.
Gyokchyan considers the sole creation of Urartu team to be a great success and notes that their primary goal is to develop basketball in Armenia. “I compare the team with a snowball. It is small now, but gradually it gets new players, investors and fans, and becomes larger.”
He emphasizes that they will have tough competitors and matches, and each game will be of great importance.
Urartu captain Amiran Amirkhanov hopes that a huge number of fans will support them tomorrow.
“We have some home games, and it is very important to show what we are capable to do. I represented Russia, I know all competitor teams, they are quite strong,” he added.
