Lionel Messi has been awarded his 6th Ballon d’Or during the ceremony in Paris.

Previously, he won the award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.

This year he beat Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo (who has won 5 Ballon d’Ors so far) to take the trophy. The list of the candidates for the award also included Mohamed Salah, Kylian Mbappe, Alisson Becker, Robert Lewandowski, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez.

Matthijs de Ligt was recognized the world’s best player aged under 21 and awarded the Kopa Trophy. Alisson Becker took the Yachine Trophy, named after Lev Yashin. Women’s Ballon d'Or for 2019 was awarded to Megan Rapinoe of the United States.
