Captain of the Greek national football team Sokratis Papastathopoulos took the responsibility for the goals conceded in the Euro 2020 qualifier against Armenia, which Greece lost 2-3.
“The goals we conceded were playground goals and I take full responsibility for that. I do not know anything specific, as for the soccer issues it is the president [of the federation] who is responsible,” ekathimerini.com quoted Papastathopoulos.
The defeat has aggravated the disputes within the Greece squad. According to media reports, Papastathopoulos told the federation president that manager Angelos Anastasiadis needed to go.
The manager reacted by saying that he believed Greece would reach the finals. “If Mr. Papastathopoulos does not believe so, he has no place here. He should not have told the press but to us in the locker room that he does not believe we can proceed. He is automatically placing himself out of the national team,” noted Anastasiadis.
