Armenia appeals against Aleksanyan decision

Today representatives of the Armenian Wrestling Federation met with the press to talk again the details of the incident that happened during the Tbilisi tournament.

Head coach of Armenia’s Greco-Roman wrestling team Levon Julfalakyan

“A dispute broke out during the wrestling match of Olympic champion Artur Aleksanyan in Tbilisi Grand Prix recently.

Aleksanyan is a great athlete. Spreading false news about him is unacceptable. He behaved admirably and didn’t commit any gross violations. He simply stepped off the mat for a few seconds, which is not allowed.

This incident will only make Artur stronger for preparing and competing in the upcoming World Championship.

We contacted United World Wrestling, telling them such treatment is unpleasant. The fans were reacting to unfair judgment of the referee. We requested the organization to see that the referees always stay in place during the matches and conduct their work correctly, so such incidents can be avoided.

We won’t sit back and do nothing. We’ll take corresponding measures.”

Secretary General of the Federation Arayik Baghdadyan

“The Wrestling Federation of Armenia held a discussion on the subject of the incident and addressed a message to UWW President Nenad Lalovic. We accept they had the right to give the loss to Aleksanyan, but they had no right to disqualify him and take away the medal. We appealed against that decision.”
