This year Armenia’s Skiing Championship will be held in Ashotsk instead of Tsaghkadzor, conditioned by the lack of snow in Tsaghkadzor.

Around 50 athletes will take part in the completion, including skiers from Iran, Mexico, Chile and Brazil. As this is a ranking competition, the sportsmen will try to qualify for 2018 Olympic Games.

Secretary General of the Armenian Ski Federation Gagik Sargsyan told Mediamax Sport that this competition will be the first step in achieving Armenia’s goal of making Ashotsk a ski resort.

“We are going to provide Ashotsk with international recognition and make it a great center for training the athletes. We will hold most of the Armenian competitions here, trying to develop the area with the support of International Ski Federation and donor organizations,” he noted.

According to him, the area has all the necessary prerequisites: convenient conditions, construction of new North-South road, Shirak Airport, border with Georgia.

“It is only 30km of Gyumri. You will be able to acquire low-cost tickets and train in perfect conditions. We have already prepared a perfect ski slope, which has operated for several days now,” he added.
