Brazil football team beat Sweden 5-2 on 29 June 1958 to become the World champion.

Several records were set in that final. First, of course, were 17 year old Pele’s goals. No other player of that age scored in the final, but Pele scored a brace in 1958.

“Brazil lost to Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup final. I saw my father cry for the first time. I remember telling him I would win the cup for him. I couldn’t think of something else to say at that moment,” Pele told.

He kept his promise and won the World Cup 8 years later.

“I only thought about my family after the victory. “Do they know I’m a champion?” I wanted to talk with my parents, but there was no phone and I just repeated in my mind, “You’ve got to tell father about this!” I managed to speak with him just a few days later and asked if he saw me with the King of Sweden,” the player told in his autobiography.

The Brazil team were received as heroes when they returned. Pele was a national treasure by then: “I met my father at last. I saw tears on his eyes again, but that time he was crying from happiness."
