In One Shot: Vardanyan’s speech and Demirchyan’s sincere smile

1983 was a year of celebration in Armenia, as the country’s largest sport and concert complex was finally put into service after prolonged work and anticipation.

One of USSR’s best and most beautiful sport and concert complexes was built on the Tsitsernakaberd hill, bringing to life the dream of many Yerevan residents.

Mediamax Sport presents a photo, made at the opening ceremony, for In One Shot series.

Although the complex officially opened in 1984, the sport section opened a year earlier.

The event’s attendees were several senior officials, members of Soviet Armenia’s government, renowned athletes, and First Secretary Karen Demirchyan, whose efforts and persistence made construction of the complex possible.

During the ceremony, 5-time European, 5-time (at that moment, later on 7-time) World, and Olympic champion Yuri Vardanyan delivered a speech on behalf of all Armenian athletes.

It was important to start operating the sport section earlier, because Armenia was to host the World Weightlifting Champion in October 1983, which would include 187 athletes from 37 countries. However, the championship took place in Moscow instead.

It’s worth noting that 3 Armenian weightlifters – Ogsen Mirzoyan (56kg), Yuri Sargsyan (60kg), and Yuri Vardanyan (82,5kg) – won gold medals in that competition.
