Iceland has an interesting and quite unique national football team. They proved that last summer, during Euro 2016.

This issue of Mediamax Sport’s In One Shot series presents the one of a kind routine of Iceland football team.

Iceland was considered a rearguard team in Euro 2016, but got to 1/4 final and found millions of fans around the world.

Coming from a distant frozen island that has more volcanoes than footballers, these players reached the final stage of the competition for the first time.

What the Vikings did was showing a team spirit and unity. They showed their famous Viking clap chant to Europe and taught how to connect to the viewers.

After each win Icelandic players approached the sectors where their fans were seated and did this unique routine together with them, raising their arms and clapping to the sound of the drums.

Versions circulated that ancient Vikings got into winning mood before fights by chanting “Huh”. They were trying to repeat the sound of geysers.

Fans of Scottish Motherwell were the first to make that chant in the game against Iceland’s Stjarnan in Europa League. Stjarnan asked for permission to use the chant during their other matches, and so it became a tradition that traveled to the national team as well.
