It is a day-off in the Candidates Tournament today. The competition will resume tomorrow to see the players clash in Round 4.

Levon Aronian’s coach Ashot Nadalyan and grandmaster Hrant Melkumyan have summed up the games of previous three rounds today.

Ashot Nadalyan

“Levon had a strong position in the first round, so I was surprised to see him repeat the moves. He wasn’t confident, that’s why he didn’t take risks and accepted a draw. Nevertheless, I believe he should have gone for a win.

In the second round, Levon played well and managed to bring the situation to a balance. He earned another half a point. The reason for yesterday’s loss was his first move, 1.e4. Even if he found a good solution, he shouldn’t use it against Kramnik, who defeated Kasparov with the Berlin defense and did the same yesterday, against Aronian.

However, I think Levon has solid chances. This is a long tournament and Levon can afford one mistake in 14 rounds. It is better to lose in the beginning than in the final stages. Bear in mind that Aronian always plays better after a loss. The pressure will ease off, Levon will rest today and be ready to play with Karjakin tomorrow. He’s a good opponent for this moment. He’s wary of Levon and our player can record a good result. I think there’s no need to take risks, but if Levon sees an opportunity, he should play for the win.

Levon doesn’t take a second in recent times. During the tournament, we only speak when he has a question about a certain position. Levon is a professional and he doesn’t need comforting or encouragement after every loss.”

Hrant Melkumyan

“Levon has been in excellent form recently and won tournaments where he competed. He will play the black against Karjakin tomorrow, whom he defeated not long ago, again while playing the black. It won’t be easy, but I think Aronian will take a risk. The tournament is long indeed and he will be able to fix things.”
