On June 19 Armenia national cadet weightlifting team and on August 19 national junior and senior teams will be able to participate in international tournaments.

Secretary General of Armenian Weightlifting Federation, Head Coach of the men’s team Pashik Alaverdyan told in a news conference that they have already met 12 out of 18 demands of IWF and another 6 are in the process.

Removal of disqualification

I don’t like discussing the doping issue, but we need to clarify anyway. We will be able to participate in competitions, and I will be the President of the Jury at the European Championship in Milan.

We have already met the majority of the demands and paid USD 50k fine. I will prove in the World Championship and the Olympic Games how strong the Armenian weightlifting is, despite the criticism that we have received over the past year.

You will not feel the gap that could be over a year, as our athletes continue to train and set world records. Before the World Championship in Tashkent I will possibly send a number of athletes to Universiade and some to U20 and U23 European Championships. Gor Minasyan and Ruben Aleksanyan can also participate in this age category.

Women’s team

Former Head Coaches of the women’s team Artashes Nersisyan and Arman Ghazaryan temporarily left the job. This was yet another demand of the International Federation. The team currently trains under the leadership of Vigen Khachatryan, who prepares the women for the European Championship. Our goal is to participate in the European Championship and qualify for the Olympic Games. The men have already gained one ticket to the Olympics.

Future projects

The men’s team is now holding a training camp in Abovyan and the women’s team in Olimpavan. The most important challenge for the seniors will be the European Championship, where we will have athletes in 10 weight categories, of which 7 will be considered Olympic. Andranik Karapetyan will perform in 80kg weight category; he was able to recover from the injury and now can lift 175kg in snatch, just as at the Olympic Games. In clean and jerk he confidently lifts the same weight as when he received the injury.
