Silver medalist of Rio Olympics, this year’s European Champion Simon Martirosyan took the gold in the Junior World Weightlifting Championship in Tokyo. Two other Armenian athletes, Samvel Gasparyan and Sona Posgosyan became bronze medalists in the same competition.

Head coach of the junior team Melik Ghukasyan told Mediamax Sport that Armenian weightlifters had a brilliant campaign.

“Samvel would have won if he completed his third attempt in clean and jerk, but this year he had to be satisfied with the bronze. As for Simon, he simply exceeded our expectations. He also tried to set a world record of 246kg, but unfortunately, failed to do so. I’m certain he’ll be able to lift that weight sometime this year,” the coach noted.

According to him, the female athletes also performed very well. Arpine Dalalyan, who finished the 4th, improved her result by 15kg and used all her 6 attempts successfully.

On July 3 the weightlifters will hold a training camp in “Olympavan”, Olympic Sports Complex in Armenia, to prepare for upcoming competitions.
