European Weightlifting Championships will kick off on April 2 in Split, Croatia.

European champion, bronze medalist of World Championship Andranik Karapetyan is ready to get back into competition 8 months after the arm injury he sustained at Rio Olympics.

The weightlifter told Mediamax Sport that his primary goal is to take part in the European Championship, feel the scene and get confidence before the big tournament. It was mentioned earlier that Karapetyan would be back in action only for the World Championship in autumn, but he and the coaches decided to try now.

“I need to get back in the game again. It’s very important for me to perform before the World Championship. I will compete in the new, 85kg weight category. I lift a ridiculous amount now, 300kg, but that’s not important. I will add weight gradually. I definitely won’t chase medals in Croatia,” the sportsman said.

He noted again that it’s never easy to succeed in sport. You just need to overcome challenges.

Currently, Armenian weightlifting team holds the last training in Abovyan before going to Croatia on April 2. According to Karapetyan, the team is in excellent mood; the sportsmen are ready to win medals and succeed in team results.

In Croatia, Armenia will be also represented by silver medalist of Junior European Championship Varuzh Ghukasyan (94kg), silver medalist of Olympic Games Simon Martirosyan and European champion among juniors Samvel Gasparyan (105kg), as well as Olympic silver winner Gor Minasyan and silver medalist of European Championship Ruben Aleksanyan (+105kg).
