Gymnastics Federation of Armenia has announced that Armenian athletes will miss the Youth Olympic Games Qualifier in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Secretary General of the federation Garnik Saroyan has told Mediamax Sport they are going to apply to the Armenian National Olympic Committee for a wild card tomorrow.

“We are not scared to travel to Baku. We are taking care of our young athletes. Gymnastics is a delicate sport, where equipment is involved, and any loud whistle or offensive remark can throw the kid off balance and result in an injury. The gymnasts should perform in silence and I don’t believe Armenian athletes will be provided that in Baku. We will apply to our national Olympic committee tomorrow so that they contact IOC. We want to get a wild card and compete in Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires,” said Saroyan.

He has noted that Zhora Smbatyan and Gagik Khachatryan are eligible for the youth games. The boys will compete in the European Championship this year and both can compete in the all-around in Buenos Aires, provided that they get the wild card.
