Levon Aronian to start Grand Prix tomorrow

The first round of FIDE Grand Prix will kick off on February 18 in Sharjah (UAE).

The Swiss system tournament will see 18 chess players compete. The 9-round competition will end on February 27.

Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian is among the contestants, and so are Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France), Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan), Ding Liren (China), Pavel Yeljanov (Ukraine), and others.

The tournament will take place in four stages in Sharjah, Moscow, Geneva and Palma de Mallorca.

The players that win the first and second place will qualify for World Chess Candidates Tournament.
