After winning the European Championship this June, Hovhannes Bachkov (64kg) won bronze medal in AIBA World Boxing Championship in Hamburg recently.

The boxer told Mediamax Sport that 2017 was indeed a successful year for him, although he had different expectations from the World Championship.

“Winning the European champion’s title motivated me a lot and helped me realize I could have similar success at the world level. That gold medal made me so happy that I’ll never forget winning it,” the athlete said.

Bachkov hoped he would return from Hamburg with gold too, but that hope was put to an end by his semi-finals rival, a strong skillful boxer, true master of his sport. In the end, Andy Cruz Gomez (Cuba) won the championship.

“I got tired in every fight but I told myself I could win even in that condition. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to do so in the semi-finals. The loss upsets me, but I will analyze why I lost so I don’t repeat my mistakes next time,” he said.

Now Bachkov wants to have a good rest and recover. The next year will be quite light, as there will be no European or World championships. Bachkov hasn’t decided yet if he should go into professional boxing, continue improving in amateur sport, or combine those two options.
