Debut: He took the 3rd place at an international tournament in 2005 and joined the Russia national team.
Start of career: He exercised gymnastic for 9 years in Tbilisi, won Georgian championship. His parents wanted him to be in sport, but didn’t anticipate a professional athlete’s career for him: “They just tried to keep my brother and me off the streets, so that we don’t get bad habits. Those were dangerous times, some of our neighbours were drug-addicts.”
Choice of sport: He moved to South Ossetia at age 16 and chose freestyle wrestling at that time. Georgi’s father was a wrestler too, but he didn’t win big titles.
The most important achievement: Olympic bronze medal. “When I won the bronze, I wasn’t particularly happy and just threw the medal into my bag right after the ceremony. One of our experienced coaches told me that the medal could become the most important thing for me. I began to appreciate every medal after that.”
Idol: Olympic champion Buvaisar Saitiev, whom he considers a legendary athlete.
People with most influence on career: His family, who are more important than sport. He believes that he has everything when he’s with family.
