The 2018 World Cup will be the first large competition in history to use video refereeing.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino noted they had nothing but positive feedback after introducing the video assistant referee (VAR) technology.
Some competitions tested video refereeing since March of 2016, and 2016 Club World Cup in Japan introduced video assistance. It is also used in Italy’s Serie B.
Nevertheless, 2018 World Cup will be the first competition to apply VAR officially.
