In 1987, HayFilm Studio shot the “The road to David of Sassoun” film.

It was intended for children, but the interesting and unique take on the Armenian epic hero touched the hearts of grown-ups as well. Soon it became everyone’s favorite.

The main hero David of Sassoun was played by one of Armenia’s most distinguished and talented weightlifters - World, European and Olympic champion Yuri Vardanyan.

In this issue of In One Shot series Mediamax Sport tells the story about the film shooting and the “meeting” of two heroes.

The film was a debut work not only for Vardanyan, but for director Grigor Gyardushyan too. The young director wanted an athletic and charismatic actor for the role of David. This epic hero is a true example of courage and patriotism, so he should be played by someone like him. They couldn’t find a better candidate that Yuri Vardanyan, even admitting he had no prior acting experience.

Everyone was talking about Vardanyan. His records and results delighted sport lovers, and his attractive appearance was becoming stuff of legends.

Thus, they found David easily. Yuri was ready to portray the hero in another film about him, “David of Sassoun”, but that idea was never brought to life.

“The road to David of Sassoun” was mostly filmed in Vayots Dzor, Armenia. Yuri Vardanyan, sitting confidently on the horseback and looking victorious, was the best David of Sassoun one could dream about and show to children to inspire them to read epos.

The weightlifter spent 4 months shooting. During that time, the picture was taken depicting David “meeting” the David of Sassoun statue, created by architect Mikael Mazmanyan.
