For the first time in history, FIFA World Cup has arrived in Yerevan. The trophy is making a tour around 50 countries ahead of the World Cup 2018.

Freedom Square in Armenian capital is currently crowded with football lovers, who will be able to see the trophy up close and take pictures with it. 1998 FIFA World Cup champion Christian Karembeu was trusted with bringing it to Yerevan.

During the official ceremony, anticipated by dozens of journalists, Karembeu has noted proudly that he is happy to have raised the cup in 1998.

“France became the world champion, and my team and I raised the cup that many players dreamed about winning. We had two Armenians on the team: Youri Djorkaeff and Alan Poghosian. I am proud to be the one who presents the cup in Armenia, in front of this beautiful theatre,” said the player.

Christian Karembeu has added that his native France as well as Argentina, Germany, Brazil and Spain are favorites to win the World Cup 2018.

The trophy’s tour began in September 2017. Before it reaches Russia and the kick off of the World Cup, the tour will take the trophy to 50 countries, including 20 states it has never visited before.
